Grand County, Colorado Springtime Activities & Adventures
When the Rocky Mountains start to defrost in the springtime, it's prime time to enjoy some of the unique adventures available in Grand County. But what are the best things to do in the area between the winter and summer months? Here are some of our favorite things to do this spring!
1. Trail Ridge Road
While there is still snow on the ground almost through the springtime in Rocky Mountain National Park, late spring is an incredible time to explore the park's most famous scenic drive: Trail Ridge Road. Take the 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Winter Park to Estes Park for sweeping vistas of mountian peaks and gorgeous valleys, complete with newly budding plant life and plenty of opportunities to see marmots, bighorn sheep or even moose! Be the first on the road for the season—and beat the summer crowds.
Note: Trail Ridge Road is closed in the winter, so be sure to check with the National Park Service on when the trail is open to vehicles. The trail is open to cyclists earlier in the season, so if you're eager to get exploring, you might want to bring your bicycle!
2. Hot Air Ballooning
Hot air ballooning is most popular during the summer and the fall months, but it's just as spectacular in the springtime! And even though the air is a bit cooler as the snow melts during the spring season, it is often 30 to 40 degrees warmer up in the basket. Enjoy the beautiful sights of spring while you soar above the treetops and high mountain lakes and streams near Rocky Mountain National Park. Springtime is one of the best times to book this unique Grand County experience!

3. Fishing
In the spring, our streams and rivers begin to swell with snowmelt, and our lakes fill to capacity, so it's the perfect time for some cold water fishing in Grand County. Fish for a variety of prize catches in our gold-medal waters including mackinaw and kokanee salmon as well as rainbow, brook, German brown, and cutthroat trout. Take advantage of the melting snow, and catch the big one this spring!
Note: Fishing licenses in Grand County are mandatory for all anglers over the age of 16. Check the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website for more information.
4. Ziplining
Looking for a particularly grand Rocky Mountain adventure? Try ziplining!
