Grand Lake Celebrates Grand Opening of “Space to Create” Live/Work Residences on Sept. 18
Grand Lake, CO — The Town of Grand Lake invites the public to the grand opening of the new Space to Create live/work residences at 1128 Park Ave. on September 18 at 1 p.m.

Space to Create is a unique new kind of live/work space, pairing nine affordable homes — five studios and four one-bedrooms, two of which are fully accessible — with a private storefront/studio. Each home’s workspace opens onto a boardwalk that runs the length of the row, linking one storefront to the next so visitors can move from one resident’s door to another. Behind them, a shared creative courtyard and fire pit give residents room to work outdoors, gather and spill into each other’s projects.
The design is aimed at Grand Lake’s workforce — cooks, shop and lodging staff, tradespeople, guides and town employees who also paint, throw pottery, build furniture or make jewelry. A storefront at home lets them sell their work, teach their craft and grow a business in the community they help run.

At the heart of the property, the roughly 3,000-square-foot Grand Spirit Makerspace, managed by the Rocky Mountain Folk School, offers an open shop and classroom for up to 28 people. Residents can use its equipment, take its classes and teach their own.
“Our biggest workforce challenge is giving working people a way to build a life here,” says Steve Kudron, Town Manager of Grand Lake. “These residences do it twice over — an affordable home and a storefront to sell your work and teach your craft and keep skilled people here year-round.”
Grand Lake is the third completed site in Colorado’s Space to Create initiative — the nation’s first state-driven effort to build affordable housing and workspace for creative workers in rural communities — led by Colorado Creative Industries within the Office of Economic Development and International Trade.
