Historic Byways & Drives

In addition to some of the classic byways and drives available in Grand County, there are several smaller roads that literally parallel history in the area. That is, several modern roads follow the original stage roads that crossed the county during its earliest days.

Explore these roads to get a taste of our regional historical roads, and see some of the same untouched beauty settlers experienced during their travels west:

  • 4-Bar-4 Road: A relatively short, 6-mile drive between Fraser and Tabernash, 4-Bar-4 Road takes you past gorgeous, quintessential Grand County scenery including horse pastures, aspen groves, pine forests, and the remains of historical stage stops.
  • Cottonwood Pass Road (CR 55): This drive diverges from US Highway 40 about 4 miles east of Granby and circles south through aspen and pine before rejoining the highway in Hot Sulphur Springs. Like 4-Bar-4 Road, Cottonwood Pass also takes you past horse pastures and the remains of historical stage stops in addition to the beautiful forest landscapes.
  • Church Park Road: Located between Fraser and Hot Sulphur Springs, this two-hour drive takes you through specacular canyons, thick forest, and sprawling ranches, complete with sweeping views of Byers Peak and several mountain ranges.
  • Corona Pass: Following the original rail lines into Grand County from the Front Range, the Corona Pass drive comes over the Continental Divide above the timerline. This abandoned railroad right-of-way has been turned into the unpaved Corona Pass byway (4-wheel-drive recommended) with beautiful views of alpine lakes and the Fraser Valley from the summit.
