The Latigo Ranch Dinner Club

November 08, 2019

This spectacular series of fine-dining events is entering its fourth year, and can be found at the award winning guest ranch just 30 minutes from Kremmling. The historic log lodge is inviting with a crackling fire and an even warmer welcome from George family. You are encouraged to come early for an afternoon of skiing or snowshoeing before the main event. Dinner begins at 6:30 PM with a small aperitif dish and builds one course on top of the next. This crescendo of entrees may trick you into thinking you've reached the height of culinary excellence, but dessert will leave you shocked, awed, and very, very full. Whether you choose the sommelier experience (where each course is paired with an alcohol chosen by Latigo's resident sommelier, Amanda George) or the dinner without the pairings, you will have an unforgettable night. The multi-course dinner is $80 per person. The sommelier experience is a rare bargain at only $100. For those who wish to participate in the dinner and not drive home afterward, Latigo offers a fantastic deal for two people to stay in a private cabin with breakfast-to-order as well as a cold buffet the following morning – $125 added to the cost of dinner! These rates include taxes and gratuities. You may pay by cash, check, or credit card when the dinner has concluded.

Colors & Their Values: Painting for All Levels

June 20, 2020

Value is the lightness and darkness of color and is the most important consideration in your composition. In this one-day class we will briefly renew our understanding of the color wheel and color relationships. Correct value placement in landscape painting will be discussed as well as the four properties of color: hue, intensity, temperature, value and how both color and value work together to construct a painting. Using "color-finders" and "value-finders" we will be able to interpret the landscape through the lightness and darkness of the colors we see to construct a good composition. In addition to demonstrations, we will create a small color-chart for our use when we paint one or two pieces that demonstrate our understanding of how we can control our color through values, rather than having our color use control us. Traditional painting methods stressed the application of tones and establishing value patterns on the paper or canvas before applying color. Perhaps a more exciting way to start is to compose in color from the beginning. Advanced registration required- please call 970-586-3262.

Drawing for Painters

July 18, 2020

A strong drawing is the backbone of a good painting. Early summer is a great time to brush up on your drawing skills to make your paintings stronger and better. Relationships of shapes, values and perspective in painting, which determine the strength or weakness of the composition in your work, will be discussed and explored. With plenty of practice time, you will become more confident in drawing and experimenting with edges, shapes, values, composition and design. You will go home with eagerness to get started on that next painting. Students will work with a variety of formats and sizes of paper while working under the inspiration of the Kawuneeche Valley. Wild Mushrooms & Fungi of RMNP

August 08, 2020

Often thought of as something to be avoided, fungi (including mushrooms) represent a vast and diverse group of organisms that play a critical role in virtually every terrestrial environment on the planet. Formerly thought of as plants, it is now known that fungi represent their own kingdom, along with plants and animals. Exemplified by prevalent, and often colorful, mushrooms, Rocky Mountain National Park has a bountiful and diverse fungal flora. Learn the basics of mushroom identification, their important role in the ecosystem, and a brief overview of the fungal kingdom. We will spend most of the day in the field, identifying mushrooms and other fungi, and gaining a first-hand appreciation of these interesting and important organisms. The History of Moose in RMNP

August 15, 2020

The present-day story of moose in Rocky Mountain National Park started in 1978. Before 1978, there is some debate if moose were considered residents of the park. We will discuss the debate and learn where the present population came from. We will spend our day exploring various topics such as moose diet, seasonal behavior, predation, impact on willow communities, and radio collaring. We will also discuss the moose’s relationship to other wildlife (such as elk and birds) and why willow communities are dramatically declining. The cause may be a surprise when we discuss the relationship between avian sapsuckers, a fungus, beaver, wildfire, and elk. What does all that have to do with moose? We will discover the answer to this question and discuss the present and future park management of this charismatic species. Advanced registration required- please call 970-586-3262.

Rocky Mountain National Park Butterflies

September 04, 2020

Butterflies fly in every life zone of Rocky Mountain National Park. This class will begin with an indoor introduction to basic butterfly biology, butterfly behavior, and butterfly diversity. In the field, we will visit several different habitats on the west side of the Park to search for late summer species, such as Rocky Mountain parnassian, Scudder's sulphur, silver-bordered fritillary, mourning cloak and dark wood-nymph. We will learn to identify these species while discussing their life histories, ecology, host-plant associations, conservation concerns, and the impact of loss of lodgepole pine stands to bark beetles. The class will focus on butterfly observation through binoculars and digital photography. However, the instructor will have a net-and-release permit to allow participants a close-up look at a variety of butterfly species! Advanced registration required- please call 970-586-3262.
